3 Tips on Styling a Casino Theme Party for Him

What better way to celebrate Karan’s 30th birthday than with a casino theme party? Forget the dinner reservation, lounge or bar outing, I wanted to throw him a party at our condo revolving around one of his favourite things; the casino. If you’re thinking he’s a gambling addict, then no, it’s just that he’s a mathie and loves the number game. This was also the best way to get about 30 of our friends together. Going out for dinner with that big of a group makes it difficult to connect with every guest since you’re stuck at your seat on a dinner table for the most part. The idea of a casino theme party didn’t come to me right away, though. A good friend helped me come up with it and that kicked off a week full of inspiration, shopping and event planning. This process inspired me to share 3 key elements with those who may be wondering how to style a casino theme party, specifically for a man in their life. Side note: Can I just say how difficult it is to plan a surprise for your spouse when you’re married and living together? Thank goodness he was out of the country for work the weekend before his birthday!

1. Colour Palette

Choose a colour palette with a minimum of three colours that are in line with casinos. There are so many colours that came to mind, but I selected black, red, golden and just a touch of white. That might sound like too much, but I promise that you will appreciate a variety of colours otherwise it’s much harder to decorate and shop for things with just one or two colours. It was easy to incorporate red into the decor and sweets. My favourite part was using a red cake stand. I was actually looking for a black cake stand but I had no luck after visiting countless stores. I took my chance with red, and it happened to put the cake together perfectly. To incorporate black, I used two large black balloons, one on each side of the dessert table. But before the guests even entered, they saw black on our condo door!

With inspiration from Pinterest, I created a playing card, King of Spades on our door and it was one of my favourite things that evening. Shoutout to Manya of Outside the Runway for helping out with making this and so many other details of the event happen. You’ll see little touches of white everywhere, like on the cookies, napkins, rolling dice in the margarita class, playing cards, etc. Also, you are probably saying to yourself that golden isn’t a typical colour that comes to mind when you think, “casino” but it happens to be the colour that elevated the look of the dessert table. When styled correctly, golden will add so much charm to your event.

2. Dessert Table

Dessert table at a party for a guy? Yes. And I’m going to show you how to do it right. Dessert tables can have quite the feminine feel to them, especially if you’re thinking to add on macarons, cake pops, and such. If you get on Pinterest and search for casino theme party inspiration, you’ll find these sweets on the dessert table but it’s important to step back and think about who the party is for, plus this will help you stay within budget. I decided to focus on just two sweets for the dessert table; a birthday cake and sugar cookies.

I loved the idea of having poker chips as sugar cookies. Although this idea was inspired by Pinterest, I added my own twist to it by asking the baker to put the number “30” on all of the poker chips. To tie in the gold colour from my chosen palette, I placed the poker chip cookies on a golden tray.

When I looked to Pinterest for inspiration on birthday cakes for a casino theme, I literally wanted to puke because there were way too many colours and way too many casino elements on those cakes.  I really didn’t want Karan’s 30th birthday party to look like his 3rd birthday party so I had to put my mind to work on this one. Eventually, I designed a cake in my mind that was simple and had just one casino element, not a handful of them. I found a local baker, Julia from Julia’s Sweet Creations and worked through the cake design with her. Final look? A two-tiered black cake with black satin ribbon wrapped around the bottom of each tier and two red dice with gold dots on the top tier. I also got a custom made cake topper to showcase his birth year as opposed to the usual trend of showcasing the age. To tie in the look of the cake together with the theme, I asked Julia to paint a brushed on look in golden, along the top of each tier. Julia designed exactly what I had in mind and it tasted just as delicious as it looked. Of course, the cake was chocolate flavoured – Karan’s favourite and thankfully, mine too. Our family and friends couldn’t stop raving about how delicious the cake was! I think I should have had a separate blog post to talk about the cake itself. Back to the dessert table. There were also eight shot glasses split in two columns on the dessert table (not photographed). The shot glass contents were carefully chosen with the colour palette in mind; we filled them up with red liqueur and topped them off with blueberries. I completed the dessert table with a few decor pieces like martini glasses with playing cards, rolling dice, and golden-foiled chocolate coins. Casino theme cups, napkins and glasses were laid out on parts of the dessert table as decor pieces as well.

3. Game Table

A game table is an absolute must have when hosting a casino theme party. Being a condo-owner, I’m constantly battling for space but I can’t complain because it keeps my creative juices flowing. When it came to the game table, the best option was to use our dinner table. Although our dinner table is black and could have worked with the chosen colour palette, I thought it’s best to dress it up a little with a casino theme table cover. You could go as fancy as you wanted here and Party City had a few options but I decided to go for the simpler one. On this table, I had a poker set laid out, along with a few decks of cards for games like Casino War, Blackjack, etc. I recommend not investing time or money in decor pieces for the game table because they are bound to get moved around when guests begin playing games.

These are essentially my 3 key tips on how you can style a casino theme party for that special guy in your life. It’s sophisticated and also won’t hurt your wallet too much. I hope you enjoyed this post as much as I enjoyed styling and planning for the event.

Aww thank you Ruthie. He really was pleased by it. That’s so exciting — a Manu theme would be so perfect for him. I have a better idea for you and I think you’ve inspired me to blog about it. In addition to this party, the next day I also rented out an indoor field and had a bunch of our friends play Karan’s favourite sport with him – cricket! Maybe that ‘s something you could do too and now I’m thinking I should blog how one might plan/arrange for it!
