Today, I want to share the story of love, marriage and specifically, a husband who supported his wife and her passions when women’s independence was still only blooming.
Back in the 1970’s, this beautiful, young, married woman wanted to pursue cosmetology. She had found a course in London, U.K. to further her education, but it would involve being out of India and leaving behind her role as a wife and mother for a few months. To her surprise, she had her husband’s complete support to travel abroad alone and pursue this passion. With both excitement and nervousness in her heart, she flew to London and completed her education, even with a language barrier. Having returned from an enriching trip filled with world-class education and unforgettable memories, she had to figure out what her next step would be. Her husband further supported her in opening the city’s first beauty parlour. It became the talk of the town, and ladies flocked to receive world-class beauty services. She then went on to pursue a second career in politics, which he so lovingly supported as well.
A marriage of more than 50 years, filled with love, respect, and 5 beautiful children came to a heartbreaking moment when he was diagnosed with prostate cancer. He didn’t make it, but to this day, Mona Lisa Beauty Parlour stands strong, and so does its head beautician, my grandmother. The month of Movember is always a reminder of my grandfather for me, and many other men who have lost their lives. The world needs more men like my grandfather, who completely support women, their passion and independence.
For those that don’t know, the Movember Foundation is the leading global organization committed to changing the face of men’s health. Men grow their best moustache all November long as a campaign to raise money for the foundation. But what can women do to support the cause? For the past 3 years, Bite Beauty has partnered with the Movember Foundation to create their own campaign called Mauvember. They formulate a mauve lipstick shade each year, allowing ladies to support Movember. I’ve been purchasing these limited edition lipsticks every November, knowing that 100% of the proceeds from each Mauvember lipstick sale goes towards the Movember Foundation. Considering my grandfather’s belief in supporting women and both, their intrinsic and extrinsic beauty, it’s the best way for me to support this cause.
My grandfather is very much alive in our hearts and his teachings have shaped the ladies in our family with incredible strength and independence. The world needs more men like this to live longer. Ladies, there’s still time to support the cause with Mauvember, and I hope you do. Sending love to everyone who has lost special men in their lives due to prostate cancer or any other men’s health disease.
