On My Way to Geisha Skin with Tatcha Skin Care

On My Way to Geisha Skin with Tatcha Skin Care

I’m not sure if I told you guys this yet, but my mom is an esthetician by profession. How is it relevant? Because it means I had the opportunity to try various luxury and highly professional skin care brands before I was even earning enough to buy them myself. Those products were mainly European and ever since, I kind of stayed in my comfort zone and didn’t try skin care products from other parts of the world. I thought I tried all the best products already and didn’t see the need to experiment. But, I was wrong.

Thanks to my blog, I’m able to try new products and share my experiences. This time, it happens to be a luxury Japanese skin care line called Tatcha (read: the secret to geisha skin). I received four products to try and I have been using them for the past few months to test them out. Here’s what I found and how I use each one. I hope it helps you understand a little bit more about Tatcha skin care products.

Pure One Step Camellia Cleansing Oil (and Makeup Remover!)

My cousin was recently raving about using cleansing oils as opposed to traditional cleansing products like creams and foams. If I hadn’t heard it from her, I would have probably never even thought twice to smother my face with oil. Ew, right? But trust me, it’s actually the best thing you will try. The consistency of the Camellia Cleansing Oil by Tatcha is on the heavier side and feels extremely luxe. Camellia oil has the loveliest and delicate fragrance. Best part? It enhances cell growth. Oh and also, it’s a great make up remover. Win-win right?

How I use it: I make sure my hands and face are completely dry. Then, I pump a little bit on my palm and massage the oil onto my face. Once it is completely covered, I wash it off with warm water. You’ll notice the oil turns into a milky consistency when you add water. I love this cleanser for nights when I am extremely tired but need to remove my makeup. It does a great job of removing makeup and that might just be my favourite part about this product. I actually tested it out by patting my face dry with a white towel. I was surprised to see no makeup on the towel, since I usually end up ruining my white towels with makeup residue with every other makeup cleanser I have used. You’ll need to wipe over any remaining eye makeup with a cotton ball, but not a bad deal right? This means I don’t need to use make up wipes and only need to use one product. This oil cleanser is pure magic, guys.

Rice Enzyme Powder

Tatcha Skin Care Review - Classic Rice Enzyme Powder

Okay, this is my absolute favourite product of the Tatcha skin care package I received. The Rice Enzyme Powder is a light exfoliator which is perfect for times when my skin is more sensitive than usual. It is delicate but removes dead skin really well. The product comes in a small jar with fine powder that transforms into a creamy consistency when activated with water. Vicky Tsai, the founder of Tatcha learned that geishas (ultimate beauty goals) use skin care ingredients that are a part of the traditional Japanese diet. Think Sushi! Does the rice part of this product make sense now? 🙂

How I use it: Completely opposite of the Camellia Cleansing Oil, the Rice Enzyme Powder requires both, the hands and face to be wet. I pour just a tiny bit of the powder onto my palm and begin rubbing my palms together until the powder turns into a creamy texture. I massage this onto my face really well and rinse with lukewarm water. Every time I do this, my skin feels incredibly smooth. This is truly my favourite cleanser of all time because no other cleanser leaves my skin feeling this soft and refreshed.

Ps. If you are a travel addict like me, you already had the same epiphany as me. This cleanser is extremely travel friendly. Since it isn’t a liquid, you can pack take the entire tub with you in your carry on!

Luminous Deep Hydration Firming Serum

Tatcha Skin Care Review - Luminous Deep Hydration Firming Serum

That’s a mouthful. Especially for someone who just cleanses, maybe tones and moisturizes their skin. But, welcome to the mid-twenties where you need to start truly caring for your skin. If you’re going to do it, might as well do it with 23-karat gold, right? Yes, the Deep Hydration Firming Serum by Tatcha contains gold flecks, giving the ultimate glow. Add this step right in between toning and moisturizing your face, and you’re golden. Get it? Haha, couldn’t help it. This serum dries fairly quickly and won’t leave your face feeling sticky. It also happens to be a great base for applying makeup. Yay for double timing as a primer.

How I use it: Once I cleanse and tone my face, I pump a tiny bit of the serum and massage it onto my face for 5 minutes. I know, that’s a long time, but enjoy the TLC. Once it has absorbed into my skin and my face is dry, I apply my moisturizer. I noticed my foundation went on and stayed really well whenever I used the Deep Hydration Firming Serum. I’m going to be using this a lot more now that it’s basically winter weather in Toronto. I’m going to need all the hydration.

Luminous Dewy Skin Mist

Tatcha Skin Care Review - Luminous Dewy Skin Mist

I haven’t done a what’s in my bag post but if I did, you’d definitely see Tatcha’s Dewy Skin Mist as one of my must-haves. This face mist is the grown up lady’s equivalent of those spray bottle fans we used as children at theme parks. I know you remember how good that felt, leaving your face so refreshed. But that was before we did makeup. Tatcha’s Dewy Skin Mist can be sprayed onto your face before and after makeup. It instantly gives your face a glow and removes any dryness from the skin.

How I use it: Sometimes on naked skin, and sometimes on done up skin. Either way, it’s an instant refresher. I hold the bottle about six inches away from my face and spray it once or twice. Nothing more, otherwise it will look too dewy. The great thing is that it lasts for about 5 hours and doesn’t interfere with my makeup.

Ps. This product isn’t a necessity but a great nice-to-have. Also, be careful with using this if you have oily skin to begin with. You may not need the product at all.

If you’re ready to take your first step towards looking like a geisha, Tatcha skin care is the way to go. I especially love Tatcha’s philosophy and approach to skin care. Once you read more about Vicky and the company in general, you will fall in love also. I’ve linked all four products below and as always, feel free to write to me about any specific questions.
